Ravenel Hong Kong 2016 Spring Modern and Contemporary Auction Results

Ravenel Hong Kong 2016 Spring Modern and Contemporary art auction has another successful sale at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong on the 29 May 2016. The Spring sale encompass a well curated mix of Contemporary Western and Asian Art from both established and emerging artists at accessible price points. The sale exhibits an exclusive collection of 113 artworks across centuries and a number of rare offerings from private collections including the groundbreaking pieces to receive the most attention from bidders was an important ink paintings of Liu Haisu’s beloved subject matter of Yellow Mountain as Ravenel joins in to celebrate the artist’s 120 years of contributions and the opening of the Liu Haisu’s Art Museum in Shanghai. “Yellow Mountain - Sea of Clouds” was sold for HKD2,400,000/USD308,880 and topped the results of the season, followed by “Golden Landscape – Yellow Mountain”, selling at HKD840,000/ USD108,108.

 

Chen Yifei’s nostalgically romantic “Zhou Village” was sold for HKD$1,800,000/USD$231,660 while Chu Teh-chun “Lumière à l'horizon (The Horizon is Brightening)” was sold for HKD1,440,000/USD185,328. Other artworks that garnered much anticipation includes a rare portrait work of Chiu Ya-tsai from the early 90s entitled “Clown”, which predicates upon ideal archetypes in human nature that was sold for HKD528,000/USD67,954 while “Wandering man” was sold for HKD552,000/USD71,042. Walasse Ting’s “Suddenly Spring Again” was sold for HKD960,000/USD123,552 and Chen Chengwei’s quetissentual “Series on the Republic of China – Bright eyes” was sold for HKD228,000/USD29,344. Yang San-Lang’s meticulously rendered “The Ancient City of Spain” beautifully imbued with a warm palette was sold for HKD240,000/USD30,888.

 

Among the many extraordinary artworks offered this season include a series of works by Pang Jiun. Pang Jiun’s majestic scenery in his magnificent interplay of greys “Spring River” was sold for HKD432,000/USD55,598 while “Hong Kong – Eastern Pearl” was sold for HKD384,000/USD49,421. “Plum Blossoms” and “Crossing the river” performed equally well, with the former sold for HKD288,000/USD37,066 and the latter for HKD288,000/USD37,066 respectively. A special category of Modern Literati ink painting by Gu Wenda’s, showcasing his magnificent interplay with linguistics “Mythos of Lost Dynasties G Series #10” was sold for HKD384,000/USD49,420.

 

Li Chen’s “Souring Dragon” was sold for HKD1,440,000/USD185,328. Prospect for Huang Poren’s “Everyday is a New Start” was good leading up to the auction and generated a heated round of bidding competition amongst collectors and connoisseurs, it was eventually sold over the pre-auction estimates at HKD264,000/USD33,977 after an extensive round of bids. 

 

Other magnificent works from the Western category performed impressively with a timeless work by André Masson, a pioneer of 20th century action painting whose works were closely associated with surrealism. “Quatuor”, executed in 1974 was sold for HKD960,000/USD123,552. The Western category also showcased other important works by Bernard Cathelin entitled “Roses d'Inde des Rebattières”, which was ultimately sold for HKD840,000/USD108,108 and French artist  Paul Aïzpiri’s brilliant “Musician” of vibrant color was sold for HKD264,000/USD33,977. Contemporary acrylic and screen prints work “Untitled (Camo Skulls)” by KAWS garnered much anticipation before the sale and was sold for HKD384,000/USD49,421 after a heated round of bids in the salesroom at the Grand Hyatt Grand Ball room. 

 

Odile Chen, the Head of the Art Department Hong Kong comments, “In light of the current global market condition, our selections of artworks this season reflects the different demands of collectors and connoisseurs in the region and it is our objection to increase Ravenel’s market share and presence in the Asia Pacific region in the future.
