The Contemporary Art Section’s highlight will be “24.09.99”, a perfect blend between Eastern and Western art by the Chinese abstract painter Zao WouKi; an infinity of visual variations makes this work extremely fascinating. A unique form of abstract expressionism is also shown in “Abstract” and “Jade Mountain” by Chu Teh-chun, as well as his early work “Sketchs in Baxian” executed in a realistic manner. The auction will also include: “Rising Sun (E)” and “The Composition of Distances No.19” by the senior Taiwanese artist Liu Kuo-Sung, “Waiting for Your Love Letter” and “I am Snow White. P.S. She is my lover” of the Chinese-American expressionist Walasse Ting, and the abstract paintings “Abstract” and “Profound” from the American born Chinese artist George Chann. These pieces outstandingly represent the art of overseas Chinese expressionists.

In “Yellow and White Peonies”, exclusively selected among the works of Chinese contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, gunpowder has been used to create refined and elegant layered petals, “Sutra from Snow Land” by Huang Gang is filled with deep historical and cultural connotations, Zhou Chunya’s “Peach Blossom” brilliantly combines China’s traditional and contemporary elements, and Pang Jiun’s “Spring Scenery” depicts an idyllic scenery in the style of Eastern literati painting. Meanwhile, Tzu-chi Yeh, and Yang Chihung with “Blue Undercurrent”, are emerging in Taiwan’s modern and contemporary art scenery, presenting works which are sentimental and romantic, delicate yet rough. Among the sculpture lots are Ju Ming’s powerful and compelling “Single Whip”, Li Chen’s Zen philosophy inspired “The Pursuer”, “Golden Palm”, and “Traveling-in-Mountain”, Zhou Chunya’s “Green Dog into Taihu Lake Stone”, and many other rare masterpieces.

In the nowadays well-received Japanese, Korean, and American Pop Art category, we have contemporary art giant Yayoi Kusama with her iconic original works “Pumpkin” and “Flowers”, the signature little girl portrait “Untitled” by Yoshitomo Nara, and also paintings and prints by Andy Warhol, KAWS, Gary Baseman, and Jeff Koons. Emerging Japanese artists such as Ayako Rokkaku, Hiroyuki Matsuura, Mayuka Yamamoto, and Iida Kiriko are also not to be missed. “SELECT: MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART”

Event will mainly focus on introducing two masters who are representative of the French postwar abstract and representational art: Georges Mathieu and Bernard Buffet. Mathieu, the father of “Lyrical Abstraction”, painted “Hommage à Dollard des Ormeaux” in 1963; this abstract composition looks magnificent, and its vermilion background conveys passion and excitement. In the multicolored “Orestide”, from 1976, the artist yearns for the romantic feelings found in epics. Buffet, a representative artist of the “Neo Expressionism”, was known to be a genius. “Portrait d’homme au foulard”, which was completed in 1954, is his outstanding selfrepresentation, while “Le Port de Beaulieu”, from 1957, is part of a series whose rare works have a very successful record on the market.

Amedeo Modigliani, leading figure of the “Paris School”, painted “Portrait d’une jeune fille” between 1917-1918. The work “Julia” by Marie Laurencin, who due to her aristocratic temperament was praised as “the Doe of Paris”, captivates the audience with the splendor of the poised and graceful goddess portrayed in it. André Brasilier’s “Fenêtre sur le parc” profiles the elegant gestures of a lady.

Inspired by the flourishing art market in Southeast Asia, the 1980’s work “Nude” by the modern Vietnamese artist Trung Nguyen, and “Nude” by Thanh Binh Nguyen have been selected to represent the graceful beauty of Vietnamese women. Two landscape paintings by the Thai old master Kid Kosolawat, “Village Lake” and “Thai Houses”, uncover quiet views of South Asian countries. “The Calling”, by Indonesian artist Sugiyo Dwiarso, is receiving a lot of attention due to its unique style.

Labeled under the “Contemporary Japanese Art” theme, “Mt. Fuji”, created by Yayoi Kusama in the 1980’s, contains the classic pattern of the early Kusama’s period, while “Ashtray” is in black and white, and its infinite extension brings out a visual sense of motion. Works such as Ayako Rokkaku’s “Little Girl in a Purple Circle”, made in a pure and vivid hand-paint style, will potentially become a collection target in the near future. Also loved by collectors are the “Pop Art” style pieces by the Americans Jeff Koons and Peter Max, and a more precise selection on each collection will be unveiled at all locations of the Ravenel Autumn Auction 2018 “International Modern and Contemporary Art” previews, guests from all circles are invited to check on the upcoming events.
