Albert CARRIER-BELLEUSE

French 1824 - 1887

A student of David d’Angers, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse had a distinguished career as a sculptor and painter in Europe. With Auguste Rodin as his assistant from 1864 to 1870, Carrier-Belleuse is best known for his Renaissance inspired sculptures often depicting scenes from Greek mythology. One of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Carrier-Belleuse was made an Officier of the Legion of Honor in 1862, and in 1876 was made artistic director at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. His most recognizable work includes the pediment sculpture of Abundance on the South façade of the Great Galerie at the Louvre palace in Paris, France along with the architectural work at the Brussels Stock Exchange.
