Vietnamese-French 1907 - 2001


Born in 1907, Li Pu was one of the first graduates of the Hanoi Art Academy, along with other renowned artists, Ruan Pan-Zheng and Pei Lei-Tong. Li was widely acclaimed for his painting techniques. In 1931, he launched a colonial art exhibition in Paris. The esteemed Vietnamese journal, L'Indochine, described him as "a true painter" (L'Indochine, Feb. 5th 1930). His pursuit of excellence in the layout and overall presentation through oil on canvas, mixed lacquer on canvass, pastel or water-and-ink painting on silk have gained worldwide recognition. Li is an expert in silk painting with outstanding techniques. He spent most of his years in France and his mixed heritage gave him an unique art style characterized by mixing Chinese ink strokes with western techniques of perspective.
