TSANG TSOU CHOI
Chinese 1921 - 2007
Born Tsang Choi in Guangdong, China in 1921. The self-proclaimed "King of Kowloon”, he was a Hong Kong citizen known for his street art, which consisted of Chinese calligraphy painted by brush. His graffiti works had including writing about himself, his family history, and his right to rule Kowloon, hence his local name: The King of Kowloon. Tsang produced street art for over 50 years and his writings could be seen all over Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
The structure of the characters in his creations is coherent and well balanced, but never rigid and inflexible. In essence, it incorporates visual elements that can be interpreted as the summation of an era while simultaneously constituting an idiosyncratic symbol for Hong Kong culture.
