Ishikawa Kinichiro

Japanese　1871 - 1945

Born in Shizuoka, Japan, Ishikawa started learning painting since he was studying in middle school. He went to the United Kingdom at his 28 year old, to learn the traditional British watercolor painting skill. Thus he had established his particular style. After a short return to Japan, he went to China to join the Japanese army as a military interpreter during the Russo-Japanese War. While Ishikawa was in China, he begun to travel around the northern east part of China, to capture the rural scenery. After the war ended, he was appointed to Taiwan as an interpreter at the presidential palace during the Japanese colonization. At that time, Ishikawa Kinichiro begun to teach the western painting skill to Taiwanese students in the former University of Taipei and National Taipei University of Education; being an earliest western art educator in Taiwan, Ishikawa had enlightened the education of western art, as well as western art pioneer in Taiwan. He was a very influential art educator in that period in the 1920s, and a preceptor, a mentor to numerous Taiwanese artists of western art, such as LI Shih-chiao, HUNG Jui-lin, CHANG Wan-chuan, CHEN Te-wang, RAN In-ting etc.
