Sigurd Ressell

Denmark 1920 - 2010

Sigurd Ressell was born in Norway in 1920. Ressell started his career when a drawing for a competition was praised by Niels Vodder, a master furniture maker who created many fine works together with Finn Juhl. Later, a prototype was made from the drawing, eventually becoming the “SR 600” chair. Sigurd Ressell was employed at Rastad & Relling Tegnekontor from 1947. He worked there as an interior architect and furniture designer until 1968, with a stay in the years between 1953-56. Ressell’s biggest commercial success at Rastad & Relling was “The Blinken Armchair” (1956). In 1958, his SR 600 won an award at Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibitions for craftsmen in Denmark. After 1968 he worked mainly for Vatne Lenestolfabrikk, a Norwegian furniture manufacturer. What characterizes many of his works is a refined understanding of form and material. One of Ressell’s representative works, the Falcon Chair, produced by Vatne, tripled Vatne’s sales in just two years, and has been a long-selling item in Europe for over 30 years.
