HUANG Yao Yang

Taiwanese 1948

Huang Yao Yang was born in Penghu in 1948, and studied architecture at Tunghai University, Taiwan, and later at the University of Liverpool, England, where he received his Masters Degree of Architecture in 1975. He moved to Belgium in 1976 and has settled there ever since, so his observations of Europe are always present in the subtle poetry of his works. He utilizes the narrative of Western Abstraction to demonstrate the spirit of the East, combining elements of movement, stillness, solidity and faintness to demonstrate the nuances of life. In his works, there are tiny bumps that either appears in clusters or on their own, which according to the artist is an echo back to the dotted Bronze ware produced in Ancient China. He thought that by incorporating this element, he could introduce the Chinese culture to more people in the world. His “Sleeping Lilies” series and “Urban Hideaway” series are a blend of Western and Eastern influences, placing Huang alongside other masters of Eastern Abstract Art.
