Chen Junde is a follower of Impressionism. In 1979, his brightly colored paintings were shown at the famous "Twelve Men Painting Exhibition"in Shanghai. Besides, only few people knew that he had close relationships with Chinese Impressionist masters who had ever studied art in the West in the beginning of the 20th Century. When Impressionism was considered as decadent and declining in China, Chen Junde followed Lin Fengmian, Liu Haisu, Yan Wenliang and Guan Liang for Impressionist research. In 1980, his work was exhibited together with three among these masters: Liu Haisu, Yan Wenliang and Guan Liang, and drew much attention. With their introduction, Chen had learned Impressionism. Then he moved from Impressionism to Fauvism and formed his own style. A lyric expressionist style could be in his paintings. (More exactly, a style between Impressionist and lyric depiction)

Liu Haisu made his comment about Chen Junde's art:"His art represents with faithfulness as Canne's, but no gloomy; with passion as van Gogh, but no sorrow..."The appearances of these artists' paintings are alike because of art form, but their contents are entirely different. His art helps us understanding how a Chinese painter to innovate the Western art. In the views of other critics, even though Chen's work is influenced by Impressionism, it still remains his own vivid manner. It's very rare in Chinese contemporary art circle.
