Catalogue Note:

Walasse Ting completed "Margriet" in his studio in Amsterdam on July 5th, 1986, It is a painting finished during the summer, although all of Walasse Ting's paintings are as joyful as summer! He travels, works and lives between New York and Amsterdam since the 80's , he loves Amsterdam because it's a city full of flowers, and once told his daughter:"It's a nice place to live." Left China in 1946, He had lived in Hong Kong, Paris, New York and Brazil, but only the beautiful trees and rivers in Amsterdam can remind him of Hangzhou's West Lake.

Walasse Ting once used many of his first-time experiences to write an autobiography in an art album, his romance and pureness can be easily discovered. Whatever is fresh and new can attract him, especially flowers and women. He said that he first smelled the sense of flowers when he was 6, however, he didn't expect that flowers can move people. He first saw the intimacy between men and women when he was 11, and to him it was an eye-opening experience. There are many more first-time experiences, and all of them are related to women and love affairs. When a painter who loves women and flowers living in a country of colors and flowers, his life must have been very pleasant, Walasse Ting chose to live in Amsterdam in his later years, and his young girlfriend is also Dutch. He never avoid talking about his relationship with many women, even called him self "butterfly gangster" he said:" Picking flowers means the covetousness of the youth of life; it also means grasping and fetching the most glorious moments of life." He also said:"..Watching natural flowers and women, let them live forever inside me, and I feel alive because of the new life born from them, the conversation between the line of sight and women body, can derive colors in a picture."

In "Margriet" the beautiful model looked affectionately to the painter, it is a veiled beauty, and this kind of style is largely different from his women paintings in New York. Flowers are as eye-catching as the women in the picture; it's a hint of a country of flowers. Some people suggest the animals like parrots, cats in his paintings carry symbolic meanings, however the artist himself explained: It is simply because the feathers of parrots are beautiful, and cats' characters just like women's He only collects beautiful things in his paintings.

At the beginning of 2002, Walasse Ting had a stroke and was in coma in his residence in Amsterdam, although he awakes 2 months later, however his recovery wasn't good, can't paint anymore, He is currently receiving cares in a medical center in Amstelveen at the north of Holland. Many years ago he once said:"After a thousand of years, who will remember the name of a millionaire? However, a painting can last forever."Walasse Ting devoted his life and emotions to art, and his paintings have already become part of people's memories.
