Catalogue Note:

Since the 90's from the past century, Huang Gang started a series of works of Chinese characters and calligraphy. He gets his materials from traditional Chinese calligraphy symbols, through the traditional Chinese paint technique, he abstractly presented the"calligraphy brush strokes"in his works, and given new meanings to traditional calligraphy, he eliminated the symbolic functions in calligraphy characters, and magnified the painting elements in calligraphy, and through the language of modern art presentations he visually and abstractly enlarged the distinguishing characteristics from calligraphy and aesthetic. Through the structure, line movements and rhythms, and brush strengths in the picture, he completely presents"Zen's"insipid yet peaceful state of mind in the eastern culture. You cannot find any of those straight and fierce emotions of western expressionism in his paintings, what you' re receiving are passions that are harmonic, logistic from the inside, freely in the painter's will, and poetic. You might not understand the meanings of these characters, but it's an art of eastern spirit, and you can understand a poetic art realm and the personal charm of the artist from his painting.
