Catalogue Note:

Previously trained in medicine, Pang Xunqin was born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, from a family rich in cultural heritage. He had longed to study fine arts since he was a little child. After completing his higher education, he set off for Paris to study fine arts with permissiom of his family. He befriended Sanyu, a person who had already spent a few years in Paris. Under the influence the influence of Sanyu,Pang gave up the conservative way of academic training. Instead, he turned to the more liberal way of study in the Academi de la Grand Chaumiere. As such, the smooth and swift curves used inspired Pang in his work.

Pang returned to China in the 1930 , and founded the "Jue Lan Society" with his friends. They held many art exhibitions. The members of the society introduced cubist and fauvist paintings into China. They have stirred up waves at a time when fine arts in China was still vert conservative. They thus launched a major movement in the fine art history of China.

From 1939 onwards, Pang worked with a group of archeologists in southwestern China. There, they collected the art patterns and written material on jade pieces done in past centuries. They eventually completed works in ancient art pattems amd curves. Many such paintings were thus created using traditional art forms and colors. The paintings included the portraits of the Miao people and other minorities in China as well as scenery paintings. His 40's drawing creations, returned to the practical way, concentrated on using the traditional technique to create the image, and tried hard to mix the western practical sketch skill into the affective tone of traditional Chinese painting. Same with this painting "Miao Woman" there has the character's outline drawing in "The Collection of Painting of Pang Xunqin" published by People's Fine Arts Publishing House, the portray is quite exquisite, presents the Pang elegant character posture, the thin like gossamer line outlines, has the graceful decoration style.
