SCENERY OF NIUMIAN MOUNTAIN, PULI
SHIY DE-JINN

Shiy De-jinn always paid strong attention to his expression of color, and purple was his favorite shade. In the 1960s, he often chose purple as the color of his background or the main tone in his watercolor or oil painting. His preference for purple also revealed his homosexual orientation and his quality of being sensitive, feminine, and delicate.

The present lot is a watercolor with a mysterious and enchanting tone depicting a mist-shrouded country landscape. Located in the middle of Taiwan, with mild climate, beautiful mountains, clean water, and abundant produce, Puli has earned the name of "Small Luoyang." This painting expresses Shiy's particular aestheticism. The artist washed large pieces of objects on the paper, making the mountains and the water reflect each other. As a watercolor, it is also blended with the rich tone of ink of Chinese classical painting. This is a typical feature of Shiy's Taiwanese watercolor landscape.
