After 1960s, Liao liberalized in his style and elevated into a whole-new artistic level of abstract landscape paintings. By this time he has reached the peak of his career. The year before he passed away, he focused on depicting the landscape of East Port in Ping-tung. This series of works, so-called "East Port paintings" are considered one of his most creative and lively works.

"Old Residence at East Port"was selected in the Liao Chi-chun Collection published by Cathay Art Museum) in 1981. The paintings in this collection were highly praised and coined the most representative ones of the artist's artistic career. In the book there is an article from A-San Wu on "Old Residence at East Port"summarized as follows:

"Liao used to live in an old cottage house built with bricks when he was a kid. Neighboring houses were also old ones like the one he lives in. The scarlet roof and grayish white walls in early country life very likely remained in his vivid childhood memory. All too often the artists have profound liking for depicting childhood memories that they tend to compose the painting in an innocent surrealistic style like Chagall's. This style is in coherence with the carefree innocence expressed in this painting, especially the non- scenographical approach. To be specific, take the tree leaves for example, they are not necessarily green. If painted in crimson red, they can appear more lively and more closely reflecting their bond with the environment".
