TROIS JEUNES FEMMES SOUS L’ARBRE
ANDRÉ BRASILIER

André Brasilier graduated from École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, he is currently 87 years old but has long expressed a high level of interest in the field of arts, perhaps it could r elate to both of his parents being painters. The impeccable skill of Brasilier was buil t up largely due to over sixty years of practice-make-perfect process. Brasilier was awarded with the first prize of the Prix de Rome in 1953, a government grant given to young artists in France to study in Rome, at the age of twenty-three. Brasilier stayed at the V illa Medici in Rome for three years. Brasilier is continuously celebrated by the international art circles over his skills, he is among one of the most celebrated artists in Europe.

In 1988, Brasilier held a retrospective exhibition at Musée Picasso Château Grimaldi in France, followed by a major retrospective exhibition being held at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia and later at Museum Haus Ludwig at Saarlois, Germany in 2005. The show exhibited the work of Brasilier from 1950 till 2004, that’s over half a century’s work and time devoted in art. The diversified creation of works presented on the show included book illustrations, stage design and decorations, tapestries, ceramics besides paintings. Brasilier is also one of the greatest ceramic artists of the time; his ceramic works were displayed in an exhibition of the Ceramic Museum of Mattlach in Germany alongside Picasso, Braque, Chagall and Miro. (You may refer to Lot 082 for the work of his ceramic work.)

Brasilier is fond of painting fine-looking herd of horses, beautiful scenery and figurative paintings, as Brasilier once claimed “One can measure the importance of a painter by his or her ability to portray the human form. ” For Brasilier, the result of the expression of pinkish skies, dream-like color of blue, are due to his passion towards life in general. Brasilier draws his inspirations from things he sees as interesting, then transcribe his impressions on canvases, this way more people would feel the innermost of Brasilier’s emotions when they see the work. Harmony, proportions, composition, expressions of emotions, these are the key elements to be found in the works of Brasilier.

In the present work of “Trois Jeunes femmes sous l’arbre,” an excellent work which embodied the combination of the above key elements. The use of blue commonly appeared in the work of Brasilier, blue being a color that is considered as a cool toned, somehow expressed a feeling of warmth in the painting. Beneath a clear blue sky, there we saw two women leaning beside the tree trunk, resting in the shade elegantly and gracefully. These women dressed in beige dresses setting against cerulean sea, making the entire painting harmonious and beautiful. The canvas is saturated with paints, yet, the fine touches of brush work fulfilled the purpose of balancing the texture, making the painting rich and subtle simultaneously. The painting of “3 Jeunes femmes sous l’arbre” is composed with serenity and peacefulness, it makes people want to be right where the painting is, r esting by the tree for a while.
