Catalogue Note:
Terechkovitch was born in the suburbs of Moscow, Russia before moving to Moscow with his family at the age of five. He was awar ded with French citizenship in 1942 having fought for the French Army. Terechkovitch was brought up in the artistic and cultur e-surrounded environments, and was exposed to Impressionist paintings at an early age. Terechkovitch was determined to become a painter as his childhood aspiration. At the age of 15, Terechkovitch was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow, but only stayed for three months before the three-year long Russian Civil War broke out by the end of 1917, Terechkovitch joined the Red Army and took on the adventurous peregrination from Siberia, Turkey, the Caucasus then finally to Marseille and Paris in 1920. By this time, Terechkovitch could finally resume his study in which he enrolled at the Academie de la Grande-Chaumière in Paris to further his studies in painting, it is during this time, he became friends with Moïse Kisling and Pierre Bonnard, a Post-Impressionist painter, in which Terechkovitch was influenced by his artistic expr essions.

Terechkovitch had his debut show of paintings exhibited at the Sal on d’Automne in 1925; in the following year, his works were exhibited together with Poetic Realists artists including Raymond Legueult, Roland Oudot at the Galerie Charles-Auguste Girard in Paris. In 1948, Terechkovitch became one of the members of the Poetic Realists group. In the 1930s, Terechkovitch designed costumes for the Russian Ballet of Monte Carlo, and married his wife Y vette in the year of 1933. Yvette soon became his main subject of painting, and later his two daughters, France and Nathalie. Terechkovitch favored landscape, still life and figurative paintings, of the many renowned artists included Vlaminck, Matisse, Braque, Dufy have been his guests of portraits.

The present work “Femme nue dans le jardin” is a portrait of the artist's wife, with most of the background covered with bluishgrey colors, setting against the splendid colors scattered in the foreground, as if there is a bean of spotlight projected on the appearance of the madam. Terechkovitch depicts the contours of the lady with red brushstrokes, with the kind of red with silky texture adorned above her hair; the necklace in tangerine worn by the lady reflects her rosy skin tone. Noticing the brightly colored birds and flowers painted on both sides of the backgr ound, the painting is not only elegant but also filled with liveliness. One can detect el ements of Impressionist knowledge applied in Terechkovitch’s paintings, in which there is an emphasis on the capture of lights and shadows, while trying to transpire the beautiful moment onto his canvas.
