Catalogue Note:

Following his retirement from National Taiwan Normal University in 1974, Li Shih-chiao traversed frequently between Taiwan and America, enjoying life with his family, art and painting. At that time, Taiwan began to be interested in "Nativist Literature" and there was resurgent attention in the works of senior artists. Li's style was uncommon as he combined exotic inspiration from various countries such as America, Canada and Japan, creating fresh elements in his works. After the mid-1970s, Li focused more on scenery, something he had not explored earlier.

Scenery at Lakeshore was completed in 1977. At that time, the artist was aged over seventy years old and his style had matured significantly. Exquisite lines of drawing and loose confident strokes signalled yet another peak in his career. The artist depicts a crowd gathering by the shore of the lake with brilliant colours and a classic composition, calling to mind the flair of certain Impressionist works. Having experimented for more than half a century, his drawings in this later period boast of brighter colours and humanity. These later works were correspondingly highly valued and favoured by serious collectors. The flags and the buildings in this painting exemplifies the influence from the foreign lands. Through the translucent washes and rational brushworks, Li exudes his own brand of unique charm.
