A BLUE AND WHITE SANKRIT AND BAOCHU PLATE

Yongzheng Six-Character Mark and of the Period (1723-1735)

The plate has a wide opening, a curved belly and a round foot. On the wall near the rim and on the bottom are two circles of fine blue and white patterns with three layers of 147-character Sanskrit writings in between. On the inside of the rim and at the center of the plate are two circles of fine bow string pattern, with an extra embellishment of blue Shizi- Knot Baochu pattern at the center. In addition, on the wall of the round foot there are two more circles of fine bow string pattern. On the bottom are two line of six characters, Made in the Yongzheng Period of the Qing Dynasty, written in regular script inside two blue circles.

Baochu pattern is made with rows of Shizi knots that can form a Piaodai (an ancient decorative ribbon). It is therefore also known as a Shizi Baochu pattern, or Jiedai Baochu pattern. In the middle of the Baochu pattern is a pattern in the form of the Chinese character 冏. This particular pattern originated from a mysterious blue-bronze pattern. Furthermore, the character looks similar to the character 明 from the Jin Dynasty. Deriving from the meaning of the Jin character, it therefore could also mean bright. Sanskrit writings appeared on Guan kilns (imperial kiln) as recent as the Ming Dynasty. Similar blue Baochu pattern plates were made in the Yongzheng period as well. Most surviving blue Baochu pattern plates have diameters smaller than twenty centimeters. In contrast, this plate has a diameter close to twenty-six centimeters. Along with its neat drawings and rich color, this unique plate is indeed a rare, fine piece of art.
