A BLACK GLAZED CHUJING BOWL

Jin Dynasty

This piece starts with a slightly narrowed round opening and a deep curved belly, before narrowing sharply from below the belly onto a round foot. Aside from the grayish white bottom, the entire body is covered in black glaze. The round foot is shaped neatly. Eight sets of three horizontal lines of Chujin pattern are parallel to one another. With the black glaze as backdrop, the elegant white lines shine through clearly .

Black glaze Chujin is made by pushing white mud onto the clay after shaping. This creates Chujin lines. Next, it is covered in black glaze and put in the kiln. Under the high heat of the kiln, the black glaze flows and gathers at the bottom of the vessel forming a thick layer. Meanwhile, the part with the thinner layer uncovers the white color from the clay.

This particular black glazed Chujin warming plate holds a unique and beautiful style. Moreover, judging by the glazing and clay, this could possibly be a rare piece from the Yaozhou Yao.
