A BRONZE SEAWATER CLOUD DRAGON CENSER

Qing Dynasty

Cast in refined bronze, the censer features a maroon-colored coat. This vessel is comprised of three sections - the lid, the censer, and the base. The lid is in a bowl shape with an oval opening. The rim angles outward with a wide lip. The abdominal wall features hollowed-out patterns of dragons and phoenixes. A dragon sits proudly on top of the slightly flat lid. Broad lips cover the rim of the oval mouth. The body features wide shoulders, a wide belly that sharply narrows into a high cinched waist and a circular foot angling outward. The handles are made in the form of two beasts decorating either side of the abdominal wall. The seawater cloud dragon patterns on the outer walls are made with the high relief technique. The outer walls of the circular feet are embossed with a circle of lotus petal patterns. On the bottom, the Chinese characters for Made in the Qianlong Period are inscribed in seal script and divided across two lines. The base features a straight neck and angled belly. On abdominal walls are reliefs of lotus petal patterns. The base is held up by four short legs. This censer is elaborately decorated, bearing a vigorous style. It is indeed a treasure worthy of the royalties.
