Catalogue Note

Gimel’s workshop looks out into Japan's Rokko Mountains National Park. Separated by glass walls, the magnificent surrounds gave the creator, Ms Kaoru Kay Akihara a sense of closeness to nature. The composed and contemplative creator believes that a harmonious environment is required to create beautiful jewellery. Her signature trademark, is playfully hiding a small gem-set bug in each of her pieces – however small, like the ruby ladybird and sapphire ant on the reverse of the daisy (lot 201) and canary tourmaline sunflowers (lot 200).

Ms Akihara personally handpicks each stone for all her jewellery, with an uncompromising eye. Each Gimel piece is memorable for the subtle graduation of colour attained by the careful selection of specific gemstones. Often using coloured diamonds as shading and demantoid garnets to portray the beauty of nature's green, as exclusively presented by the stunning jadeite hoop necklace in lot 199. Her love for pearls, whether cultured or natural, is often used in many of her designs. Ms Akihara believes that pearls become a part of the wearer's life and will lasts for generations beyond.

Ms Akihara is driven by her fascination with the natural world. Simplicity and exquisite workmanship is what makes a Gimel piece the pinnacle of any jewellery collection. Gimel proves that standing the test of time can be achieved by skills and dedicated craftsmanship. Ms Akihara's goal is to create something aesthetical and everlasting for the future world to see and behold.

“Dancing lights, young fresh leaves eager with breath of life.
Humming bumblebees in search of honey, abound in fragrant with flowers.
Sunflowers face strongly towards the burning sun.

A dragonfly dances within the cool breeze.
Rhythmical cosmos sprays the autumn field,
Maple deepens its red, smiling in the tranquil sunshine.
Acknowledge the approaching winter.
The earth falls slowly to sleep as white crystals descend from heaven.

What have been lost and what will be lost, circle of life.
This beautiful and irreplaceable nature expressed in jewelry.
That is Gimel.” - Gimel
