Opening the Doors to Heaven in the name of a Saint

Pétrus is named after Saint Peter, and its label features a portrait of him holding a key that opens the door to heaven. Among the Bordeaux big eight winnery, Pétrus is the only one that has yet to use the title of Château. Perhaps, Pétrus does not even wish to compete with the other seven for this title, and instead, chooses to remain stationed closer to the hall of God.

In 1925, Pétrus was managed by Madam Loubat. Aside from meticulously cul- tivating the estate, she actively promoted Pétrus amongst the upper levels of French society. By receiving this wine as a tribute, the British Royal Family also added to the brand's success. In 1947, Madam Loubat was invited to the Queen of England's wedding.

Pétrus' main variety is Merlot. Depending on the yield of vintage, 0 to 5 percent of Cabernet Franc is added to the blend. Many rounds of green harvesting are conducted to infuse more nutrients into the remaining grapes. In terms of yield, Pétrus provides the lowest amount out of all Bordeaux, but, which echoes its rigorous focus on quality.
