建廠於1825 年的Port Ellen 酒廠命運多舛，在其近160 年的歷史上幾經易主，雖於1925 年開始併入Diageo 集團，卻因美國禁酒令的施行，於1929 年便停產直至1967 年，80 年代初期的威士忌經濟泡沫更讓Diageo決定於1984年正式關閉Port Ellen 蒸餾廠，僅保留麥芽製作的工序，提供麥芽給艾雷島上其他蒸餾廠使用。爾後又一直要到2001 年，才由Diageo 包裝其酒廠庫存老酒，推出「限量版系列Limited Edition」，此一系列的每一個批次都是拍賣會場上炙手可熱的品項。

Sweeter and much rubberier right at the start, with some typical notes of tyres, tar, pepper…It then grows more and more powerful and drier… What a body! The pepper grows even stronger after a few minutes… And the sweetness vanishes, leaving just a mixture of smoke, pepper and lemon zest that might displease the lovers of round and smooth whiskies – but not the peat heads, obviously. The finish is very long but again, very austere. Decidedly! - Whiskyfun 93
