Catalogue Note:

Walasse Ting was born in Shanghai in 1929, he is a self-learned painter, official trainings include only calligraphy and sketches, but he still insisted to paint for decades. He relied on no one but himself, he had painted on the streets in Shanghai, by 19, he took five dollars with him on the trip to Africa and France. Although he knew nothing about French, but the western art world still gave him much influences, especially Matisse's paintings, they made his paintings full of vivid colors. In 1960 Ting moved to New York, befriended various modern abstract painters and pop artists and became an active member of the American art circle, he seeks inspiration from life, paint with the color of the sunshine, clever lines, exaggerated figures, and lots of colors, all of these became his unique language, and women, flowers, birds and animals have all become part of his works.

Ting reached his first peak in his artistic career in the place where contemporary was born: SOHO, New York, he painted several great sensual and sexy works. He used color to shape, like "a magician of colors" "The skins of any colors, his, eye shades, clothes, stockings of the women in his pictures are vary and charming. Bright yellow, red, purple, green...all mixed together turned out to be the four seasons in the nature, they don't scream nor disordered, they simply are beautiful"(From Huang Yu-ling, "When a Sentimental Person Meets Another",Taiwan School, Taipei, Sep. 1993, p.15)

"Goya's Lover",the 1977 tribute towards the master. Inspiration for the painting comes from "La maja desnuda"(The Nude Maja, 97 x 190cm, now kept in the collection of Madrid's Prado Museum), a piece completed in 1800 by the 18th century Spanish master Francisco de Goya (1746 - 1828). The painting is regarded as one of the greatest nude paintings in art history. For the women and nude painting loving Walasse Ting, the romanticism in Goya was a truly inspiring. Walasse also incorporated decorative materials such as his beloved flowers and cats into his painting.

"Goya's Lover"was the representative work of the artist in the 70's, he continued the fluent abstractionism present in his earlier works, and began the "titillating"works on paper of his latter years, elegant women's naked body has become a sensual rhythm, as if they are made of water. Her gesture reminds Tiziano Vecellio's geisha girl, Giorgione's goddess, the women from Fran is Boucher's 18th century party, and Manet's "Olympia" His boldly choosing the lied down women as his them shows his love towards classic masterpieces, with Ting's unique tenderness on interpreting females, he painted a rare, delicate and pretty picture, and is also one of the rare works by the artist.
